I'm With You in Rockland

Ask me anything   the world is mostly divided between madmen who remember and madmen who forget.

whoneedsfeminism:

Because I shouldn’t be called a slut for having sex with my boyfriend or someone I just met or an old friend. I need feminism because its my body and I should be able to decide who can and can’t touch me. I need feminism because I get looked down upon for having sex but the guy I have sex with gets a high five. I need feminism because I shouldn’t feel ashamed for liking sex.

In general, we think of translators as people whose job, briefly summarized, is to create elegant texts out of works in foreign languages. But J.R.R. Tolkien, in his translation of Beowulf, set out to do something different. The Lord of the Rings author published a translation that he kept intentionally clunky. Why? In his telling, he did it to better imitate Old English.

"A black child with a transparent rib cage, huge head, bloated stomach, protruding eyes, and twigs as arms and legs was the favourite poster of the large British charitable operation known as Oxfam. Oxfam called upon the people of Europe to save starving African and Asian children… and never bothered their consciences by telling them that capitalism and colonialism created the starvation, suffering and misery in the first place."

"Did I dream you dreamed about me?
Were you here when I was full sail?
Now my foolish boat is leaning,
Broken lovelorn on your rocks,
For you to sing, ‘Touch me not, touch me not, come back tomorrow:
O my heart, O my heart shies from the sorrow.’"
